If it’s been a while since you’ve been to Breck, then you might know this place by its former name, The Whale’s Tail. The Blue Stag has dropped the nautical-themed décor, and although the food has a more modern, gastropub-like style, the interior design and atmosphere is very laid-back ski lodge.
The fireplaces, patios, and rustic furniture keep the customers cozy as they sample from the selection of beers and whiskeys and the food menu: gamy Chili Colorado, individual pizzas, Wild Mushroom Venison Stroganoff, and Bacon-Wrapped Buffalo Meatloaf are some favorites.
What They’re Known for: Some things have carried over from The Whale’s Tail. You can still get 50-cent wings during happy hour (3p-6p). Sunday is all you can eat crab day—from open until they run out, so plan to get there early if you’re looking to take advantage.
Did that 3-hour nap you took after the full day of skiing put you way behind on your dinner schedule? Although the kitchen closes at 9:30, pizzas are served until midnight.
What to Watch for: The close tables are great for swapping ski stories with others, but they can also crowd the wait staff making their job a little more difficult at times. You might need to be a little more patient with the speed, but everything else will make up for it. Sitting by the front (double) door can be a chilly experience, so look for the fireplaces if warmth is high on your list of needs for the night.
