Mountain Flying Fish is not your typical ski resort restaurant. This fine-dining Japanese establishment makes some of the best Japanese food in Breckenridge. Take a seat at the sushi bar and watch chef and owner Tetsuo Shimoda slice up some of the best raw dishes in town. If sushi isn’t to your liking, then you’ll be happy to know that Mountain Flying Fish also has several traditionally-cooked dishes like teriyaki, tempura, Japanese curry, and Nabeyaki udon. You won’t often find Teriyaki Kobe beef, so this might be a dish you don’t want to pass up. The appetizer menu also has all kinds of appealing dishes like shumai, edamame, yakitori, and sautéed soft-shell crab.

What They’re Known for: Upscale Sushi. At 9600 feet, on a ski vacation, most people don’t typically think that they will be eating sushi for dinner. If you love sushi, then you will have to have it. Chef Tetsuo-san trained in Japan under master chefs and has had over 20 years of experience in Japan and New York City before moving to the Breckenridge area.

What to Watch for: No reservations. Mountain Flying Fish is a first-come, first-served, walk-in only restaurant. Since this restaurant is only open for dinner from 5p until 8p, if it’s a busy night, you will have to wait. Come early to avoid the rush or at least early enough that you’re sure to get a table.

Price: $5-$33
