The inspiration for this venue’s name came from Yosemite Camp #4, a famous location in the world of rock climbing and the last place to get hot food and drink before heading for the summit. Camp 4 Coffee strives to create the same sense of camaraderie and comfort that the camp offers to climbers. If you don’t want to spend a lot of time on breakfast–but want to fuel up for the day–try a cup of one of Camp 4 Coffee’s blends accompanied by a pastry or a hot breakfast burrito.
What They’re Known for: Truly outstanding coffee. Owner Al Smith left Alaska more than 20 years ago to start a coffee cart business serving visiting skiers and local residents at the Crested Butte bus stop. Smith–who has a 6-cup-a-day coffee habit–has spent the last two decades perfecting his art and expanding the business into three locations (as well as several more carts). The coffee sold in Camp 4 Coffee is roasted by hand in small batches, and only two people know the secret for creating the special beans. If you’re a coffee lover, even the names of their special blends can give you a caffeine craving–Art of Darkness, SledgeHammer (their most popular blend), and Columbo gold are just a few of the selections. But don’t worry if you’re not a coffee drinker–you can enjoy a Toltec hot chocolate or a spicy chai any time during the day.
What to Watch for: Don’t let the long lines discourage you from trying one of Camp 4 Coffee’s hot and tasty breakfasts–the servers know how to move people through quickly.
