Historical Overview

The Denver Mint was established in 1863 – before Colorado was even admitted to the Union as a State. At this time, the City of Denver was part of the newly formed Colorado Territory. The Denver Mint primarily functioned as a place for weighing and certifying gold that had been mined from the mountains of Colorado. The first coins were not minted here until 1906.
