DENVER, CO., Jan 21, 2014 – Saige Mateo, a student at Colorado Mountain College — Glenwood Springs, took home the First Annual $1000 Colorado Ski Authority Scholarship.

Mateo, 20, a native of Manhattan, NY, is in her third year at CMC studying photography, but it was her paintings that got her the honors.

“We had 25 applications from students in 14 different Colorado schools,” says owner Matt Myers. “While it was tough to narrow the list down to four finalists, once we got there it was Saige’s work and her personal story that made it clear that she was the most deserving.”

The Colorado Ski Authority Scholarship (CSA) is a Colorado-based scholarship aimed at funding a college student in any program in Colorado. However, the CSA Scholarship was essentially a creative scholarship, asking students to submit a creative portion along with their transcripts and definition of need. Mateo stood out above all the rest.

They even put the finalists on their Facebook page and let their fans help tell them who was best.

“This was our first year to provide a scholarship, and the most surprising thing for us was how great it felt to help a student. I wish we could have given out more scholarships. Maybe next year. But the other thing we loved were the creative submissions. We had paintings, photographs, short stories—some sermons, even a rap about herbs. We had a lot of fun going through them all.”

The application period for next year’s scholarship will open sometime in the fall.
