Top Expert Skiing Resorts
Crested Butte
If you want to ski extreme in-bounds terrain, then Crested Butte is a ski resort that you should certainly visit. Crested Butte is one of the most challenging ski resorts in Colorado. Each year Crested Butte is home to an extreme skiing competition that brings some of the best skiers from around the world. There are several areas of this mountain that can challenge even the best skiers and snowboarders.
Telluride
This is one of the most popular ski resorts for extreme skiers in Colorado. Telluride is located in the southwest corner of Colorado in the San Juan mountain range. There is lift access to plenty of great expert skiing at Telluride, but if you want to ski the most extreme terrain you will have to hike a little bit. Hike-to ski terrain here includes the Gold Chutes, Back Iron Bowl, and Palmyra Peak.
Aspen Highlands
The top of Aspen Highlands is capped by the Highland Bowl. This area provides more than 1,500 vertical feet of challenging terrain. The Steeplechase and Olympic Bowl areas are also very steep and challenging areas of the mountain. Black diamond and double-black diamond ski runs account for 52% of the ski terrain at Aspen Highlands. This resort does not have as many in-bounds cliffs as Telluride or Crested Butte.
Arapahoe Basin
The ski terrain on the East Wall at Arapahoe Basin is extremely steep. This part of the mountain is only accessible by hiking. The Pallavicini face rises above the Arapahoe Basin parking lot more than 1000 vertical feet and this is one of the most legendary ski trails among the Colorado locals. This is a great place to find steep skiing and avoid the huge crowds that you might find at the major ski resorts.
